Cupping Therapy Explained: Methods, Benefits, & Risks

From Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps to Hollywood action star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, cupping is an ancient healing practice sought out by celebrities, athletes, and even office professionals. The popularity of cupping is often a hot topic for two main reasons. Firstly, its signature marks—which look like circular, red, bruises—tend to spark buzz when spotted on high-profile athletes and actors. For the average person, they can prompt second looks from co-workers at the office to strangers at the grocery store. Secondly, while most of its benefits are still considered anecdotal and supported primarily by preliminary scientific research, cupping therapy remains a popular alternative treatment believed to help relieve pain and support the body’s natural healing processes.

How Does Cupping Therapy Work?

Cupping therapy is performed by a trained practitioner who places sterile cups on the body to target specific muscles. The cups are typically glass, silicone, or plastic.

Fire cupping creates suction by briefly heating the inside of the cup, then placing it on the skin, causing the air to cool rapidly. This vacuum effect can also be created mechanically using a pump device. This non-bleeding technique, known as dry cupping, is not meant to break the skin or draw blood out of the body. It pulls blood toward the skin’s surface, expanding blood vessels and creating the signature “pepperoni” marks, which typically fade within a few days. Most people do not find cupping treatments or marks painful, but some may experience mild discomfort from the pulling or pinching sensations during treatment.

What Are The Benefits Of Cupping Therapy?

Rooted in traditional practices that can be traced to China and the Middle East, cupping therapy is believed to offer several benefits.

  • Relief Of Tension & Pain: Dry cupping is often considered a natural, drug-free, and non-invasive treatment for reducing inflammation and managing musculoskeletal pain, chronic pain, and joint pain. Cupping can help relieve headaches, including migraines, and alleviate stiffness and tension in the neck, shoulder, and back muscles. Many fitness enthusiasts, competitors, and professional athletes use cupping to relieve pain, support recovery, manage sports-related conditions and injuries, and stimulate blood flow.
  • Increased Circulation: The suction of cupping therapy boosts circulation where cups are placed. In traditional Chinese medicine, cupping is believed to balance the body’s yin and yang, and enhance the flow of life energy, known as 氣 (“chi”/”qi”). Improved circulatory health can lead to improved skin health, immune function, and digestion.
  • Lymphatic Drainage: The lymphatic system, unlike the circulatory system which relies on the heart as a central pump, does not have a dedicated organ to move lymph fluid. Cupping therapy is believed to encourage the release of toxins from tissues and stimulate the flow of lymphatic fluid—carrying lymphocytes, bacteria, and metabolic waste—through lymph vessels and nodes. Lymphatic drainage can reduce swelling, bloating, and water retention.
  • Immune Activation: Cupping suction is thought to trigger a mild, controlled inflammatory response. Drawing blood to the surface of the skin, which causes localized redness and bruising, is believed to activate the immune system, helping to repair tissues and reduce pain in targeted areas.

What Are The Risks Of Cupping Therapy?

Always consult with your healthcare provider before beginning cupping. Skin infections and scarring are some of the risks associated with cupping. While it is generally safe when performed by a trained specialist, fire cupping carries the risk of burns.

Cupping therapy may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions, such as bleeding disorders, skin infections, or cardiovascular disease. The marks left by cupping are temporary, but some people may find the visible redness and bruising to be a prominent downside of the treatment.
